Reykjavik, Iceland Itinerary

Planning a trip to Iceland? I’m recapping everything you should do, where to stay, and what to see. Iceland has been a huge up and coming country over the years. If you’re looking to go soon, I hope you can use this as a guide.

WHERE TO STAY:

  • Rent a studio apartment in Kopavogur, a town between the airport (Keflavik) and Reykjavik. This is the perfect location for a short visit as it is about 15 minutes from downtown and 7 minutes from the Blue Lagoon. They are super comfortable, offer free parking, and is within walking distance of supermarkets. You can book here.

WHERE TO EAT:

  • Browse the aisles at the supermarket “Kronan.” Iceland is expensive so buying snacks in an effort to save money = smart traveling!
  • Order chicken shawarma and rice from Ali Baba Grill ‘N Shawerma
  • Snag some gelato and coffee at Eldur & Is. The shop has free wifi and offers a true Icelandic experience as locals venture there. People watch, sip on a latte, and listen to the fascinating language.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Walk through downtown. The neighborhoods are full of artwork and there are a ton of bookstores and coffee shops. Be sure you don’t miss the Old Harbour and Hallgrimskirkja church. It’s hard to miss since it’s a focal point to get around.
  • Visit the waterfront and take photos in front of one of Reykjavik’s more popular sculptures – the Sun Voyager.
  • Drive to the Grotta Lighthouse to see the Northern Lights. It’s voted one of the best places since it’s away from the city and is the north-westernmost point of Iceland.
  • Soak in the Blue Lagoon! (Buy tickets ahead of time). Fun fact: It is actually manmade and is not a natural geo-thermal bath like I originally thought. It is steaming hot and the perfect thing to do before heading to the airport as the minerals are great for your skin and muscles.
  • Take in the views of Iceland at Viking Park. The area is surrounded by so much history and culture.
If you visit in the winter/spring, you will experience only a few hours of daylight.

Have you been to Iceland before? Let me know in the comments below. I’m always highlighting my travels over on my Instagram, so make sure to follow along! See you there!
